Hello, I’m Kelly Jones, a working-class lesbian playwright from East London. Winner of the BBC Drama Award in 2015. Named in The Stage ‘Ones to Watch’ list 2018. Alumni of the Emerging Playwrights at The Bush, Mercury Playwrights, BBC Drama Room and OrangeTree Writers collective. Peter Shaffer Commission recipient
Recent credits include Ghost Stories by Candlelight-HighTide/The Globe, When you see me – Scottee and Friends, Room to Escape – BBC Arts, Bump – Reading – ‘Inventing the future’ festival Hightide. Most recently My Mother’s Funeral: The Show- Paines Plough/ The Belgrade/ Mercury Theatre, which completed a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe, was the recipient of The Lustrum award and a Scotsman Fringe First for Outstanding New Writing. In Janurary it transferred to The Yard Theatre London and the Soho Playhouse New York.
Currently I am writer in residence with SISTER Productions and have work in development with Ardent Theatre, Hattrick Productions and NT Connections and BBC Radio 4.
My work is always inspired by my experience of poverty, the benefits system and the intersection between my class and queerness. I am passionate about writing unseen- yet lived- narratives about working-class life with heart, humour and joy whilst interrogating the systems that fail us.
